Why Pascal
Clinical risk measurement should rest on evidence that can withstand clinical, scientific, and operational scrutiny. The research foundation for AE Outcomes
Pascal's research methodology brings together peer-reviewed and U.S. government published evidence with real-world implementation evidence.
What AE Outcomes are
AE Outcomes are clinically validated adverse event outcomes, generated by Pascal's proprietary technology from real-time electronic health record and health information technology data. The term describes the outcome signal at the center of Pascal's approach to clinical risk.
Two forms of validation
Peer-reviewed published evidence. Peer-reviewed and U.S. government evidence supports the evidence-based clinical methodology Pascal uses. Pascal's own approach to real-time, electronic health record-based safety surveillance is published in Health Affairs: Classen D, Li M, Miller S, Ladner D, "An Electronic Health Record-Based Real-Time Analytics Program For Patient Safety Surveillance And Improvement," Health Affairs 2018;37(11):1805-1812. The wider evidence base for trigger-based adverse event detection includes Bates DW, Levine DM, Salmasian H, et al., "The Safety of Inpatient Health Care," New England Journal of Medicine 2023;388:142-153, which identified at least one adverse event in 23.6 percent of admissions across eleven Massachusetts hospitals.
Real-world evidence. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General has applied trigger-based adverse event detection across successive national studies of Medicare beneficiaries, including "Adverse Events in Hospitals: A Quarter of Medicare Patients Experienced Harm in October 2018" (OEI-06-18-00400). In Massachusetts, the Betsy Lehman Center contracted with Pascal Metrics for a first-in-nation pilot of automated adverse event monitoring across a group of acute care hospitals.
Different sources answer different questions
| AE Outcomes | Administrative claims | Voluntary event reporting | Manual chart review | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Clinically validated outcome signal | Administrative and payment record | Events submitted through reporting processes | Case-level retrospective review |
| Timing | Designed for use from real-time health data | Available after administrative processing | Available when an event is reported | Available after review |
| Use in combination | Can serve as a common outcomes spine | Adds administrative context | Adds reported-event context | Adds detailed retrospective context |
